Balance is an exquisite coordination of sensorimotor stimulation that includes proprioception, brainstem, cortex and vestibular structures and functions. Information about where our bodies are in space and how we are managing being vertical in gravity is primary to our sense of being and relationship to ourselves and others.
It is not surprising that when we experience vertigo or dizziness as the world moves around us when we are still can be quite unsettling. The communication between the stability of the inner ear and the perception of uncontrolled movement in space can make us stop and wonder what is happening in an uncomfortable way.
Neuroception is the term given by Stephen Porges to describe the unconscious ability of the nervous system to perceive safety and danger in the environment and relations to others. This function, as well as the function of the vestibular organs, brainstem and cerebellum is extremely sensitive to even the slightest changes in movement and balance of the body and the nervous system but also to that which is happening in the world around us.
We will explore the relationship of these essential body-oriented roles using the Tuning Board and awareness exercises to help us understand what is happening and how to get us back to equilibrium when our eyes are moving the world in a disorienting way and we don’t know why.
